Why people buy what they buy

What are the reasons people settle on an item to purchase? Let’s be frank; you work hard for your money and there are many options out there for almost anything that you would want to purchase. So what makes an item THE item that someone lands on? Many factors play into this, but in reality, it comes down to just a couple key items in our opinion.
Solves A Problem
Think back to your last nonemergency purchase of a large item…was it something that solved an issue for you? Maybe you kept dropping your phone, so you opted for a higher end drop proof phone case? Maybe you were buying shampoo that made your scalp dry out, so you opted for a moisturizing version? Maybe you hate sweet relish, so you went and bought dill. Anyway you look at it, you have an issue, and you want to buy things that will help you eliminate that issue or solve the problem that you are having.
Same Features, Better Price
Price is rarely the single buying issue for a person. If price was the single issue with most folks, we would all be driving low-end cars with no features, and that is simply not the case. When price does become a real key motivator though is when you are looking at very similar items, with similar features, and one is higher priced than the other. Unless there is a darn good reason (like prestige…we will talk about that later), you are more than likely going to opt for the lower price item with the same features.
Better Features, Higher Price
As stated above, not everyone looks at having the lowest price as their key buying term. Many people are not only looking for newer, better features, they are willing to pay much more to get them! If you want a high-end stereo in your truck, the factory model isn’t going to do…period.
Prestige
Now we get into why Apple can charge more (and other brands of course). Sure, it could be argued that Apple has a better product than others, but when you really boil it down, Apple has a fan base that wants to have the prestige of owning Apple branded devices. Amazon has a similar feeling right now in comparison to Walmart. Would you rather have an Amazon package arrive at your door in their brown box, or a Walmart one? Some may have just answered that they didn’t have a preference, and if that is you, then prestige is not a reason you buy what you buy, but many out there just wrinkled their nose at the idea of a Walmart box arriving at their door, and it is a real problem for Walmart right now as they look to steal market share away from Amazon.

Many companies focus on the word MORE. While we think that more options and more service are both good things, at GEN-Y Hitch, we look at “more” a little differently! Let me explain!

Make our customers day, every day!

It isn’t enough to come to work on Monday and make a few of our customers days! At GEN-Y Hitch we want to be constantly striving to do our best to make each interaction we have with people the highlight of their day..not just another interaction! 

Only say no if you also can say yes!

If we have to say no to something our customers want or need, we also want to come to the table with a “yes” that we can do to meet our customers where they are. We may not always be able to do what a customer wants as a business and stay in business, but we can always come up with a happy medium where this is a win-win for all involved!

Realize that everyone has situations that they are dealing with every day!

When we talk to a customer that is irritated or upset, we keep in mind that we have no idea what that customer has gone through that day/week/month! We strive to empathize each day with each customer to attempt to let them know that we care about them!

Each situation is different! Having a policy in place doesn’t mean that service has to go out the window!

Policies and procedures are great, but they cannot run you..you have to run them! A policy is a guide, and there are exceptions that come up! We strive each day to use our policies as a guide but not as 100% set in stone.

Innovation is what drives us!

Throughout history it is easy, looking back, to see who the innovation drivers were. Those men and women who weren’t happy with an “improvement”, but wanted to take their industry to the next level. Today we will look at four innovation drivers that changed their entire field. We hope, in 50-100 years to be added to a list like this, as we are not happy with simply inventing a “game-changer”, we want to take the world of hitches, flip it on its head and create a new game altogether!

1. Leonardo da Vinci-1452-1519-

Sculptor, a painter, inventor and all around genius, da Vinci, possibly more than anyone else, drove innovation in a way that inspired many after him to invent, unleash and pursue industry changing ideas and products that have allowed us to see the technology we do today.

 

 

2. Nikola Tesla-1856-1943

Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, physicist, and futurist who is best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply system. Another amazing thing about this man was his willingness to give away the innovation that he discovered to better society around him. Many copied Tesla’s work and even sold it portraying it as their very own.

 

3. Henry Ford-1863-1947

Henry Ford was an American industrialist, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, and the sponsor of the development of the assembly line technique of mass production.

 

 

4. Steve Jobs-1955-2011

Apple has seen its share of ups and downs…then ups again. Steve Jobs was a man of vision and a transformational leader that brought the world into the smartphone age. Due to his work and the inspiration he provided we are now in an age that allows so many of the things that we enjoy to be accessible to so very man people.

 

Our goal at GEN-Y is not to simply have the best, newest, greatest hitch around, but to touch people’s lives in the process, whether that be our employees, vendors, dealers or even the UPS man that walks through our door. That is what we feel sets inventors apart of innovators and visionaries…the care that they have not just for their work and company, but for the people who they interact with each day.

Phones that ONLY called people were a HUGE step in the right direction, but that is all they could do. Sure, you could call someone while you were on the go, which made life much easier, but there was no other purpose but that to your mobile device. If you wanted to keep a calendar, utilize GPS and call people, you needed three separate devices for a very long time. All of these devices were good, but none of them were GREAT. Why is that? They lacked versatility!

MEGA-Exciting, MEGA-Duty, MEGA-Hitch!

The 2017 Ford F-350 came out in late 2016, and with it, the 3” monster receiver. Many people looked at it and said, “WOW…that’s big.” That’s along the lines of what we said, then, our entrepreneur cells kicked in and we thought, “Hey, we need to make a hitch to fit this….that tows 32,000 lbs. Lo and behold, the MEGA-Duty was born.

Now, MANY have talked to us about “reducer sleeves” and the like, and we understand that is A solution, but we think A BETTER solution is to #GetHitched with a MEGA #GenuineGenY.

Now of course, these hitches aren’t for everyone..in fact, they are for a small segment of fans of ours, and we get that too, but if you are going to spend $85K on a truck, shouldn’t you have a drop hitch that keeps up with what its capabilities? I mean, you wouldn’t buy a 12 passenger van if you only had 3 people in your family with no plans to grow, right?

That being said, we are mega-excited about our mega-duty hitch. 3 Ways Your Hitch Might Be Letting You Down

Let’s face it…products aren’t always all they are cracked up to be. In the hitch industry, this rings even truer as very little innovation has happened over the last 4 decades. So why is it so important that innovation occurs more often? Well, because most industries are innovating, and that leaves any industry not doing so dangerously behind the times and dangerously incompatible with other products that might otherwise be great partner companies. Let’s look at 3 ways your hitch might be letting you down right now if you are still using old technology.

  1. Your tongue weight may be way off and you don’t even know it!
  2. Your up and down inertia may be shortening the life of your truck, trailer and quite frankly, your body!
  3. Your gas mileage may be suffering

Now the GEN-Y Hitch addresses each of these potential issues in a real way. If you are using one of our torsion suspension hitches, for example, you would be experiencing a 90% absorption of the up and down inertia that can be a key factor in limiting the lifespan of your trailer and truck parts. One of the less understood elements of the lack of innovation is the tongue weight measurement issue that many experiences. Too much tongue weight is a bad thing, and too little may simply mean you are towing less efficiently.

GEN-Y, GENIE or GENNY?

We have our business name pronounced in a LOT of different ways each week, and quite frankly, it doesn’t bug us one bit…let me explain why…

1.When people pronounce it “GENIE”, we assume they are picturing a Genie like in the movie Aladdin, and our hitch does, in some ways, “grant wishes” for people. What do I mean by that? Well, for many years, the hitch industry has been stagnant when it comes to new solutions. The industry as a whole has just “made do” with the same outdated technology while most other industries have progressed forward. We think that people have wished for a tougher, more versatile hitch, and we are happy to be the “GENIE” that grants that wish.

A “Ginny” Mule

2.When people pronounce it “GENNY,” we think they may be picturing a “GINNY” mule, which is a WORK horse! We don’t mind this either because our hitch allows you to do more…just like a mule does! While we don’t like some of the other connotations of being called a mule in other areas of our lives, in this instance, it makes us happy!

3.The actual pronunciation, “GEN-Y” (GEN-Why) is also one that we LOVE to hear, mainly because it is the actual name of our company, but also because it reminds people that the millennial generation isn’t ALL about spoiled kids who think they are entitled to latte’s and beard oil and a free ride. We are PROUD to be a part of Generation-Y, and we think that work ethic, quality, and professionalism isn’t bound to any one generation but is a personal quality, and we ONLY hire those that can aspire to this goal..regardless of their age or to which generation they belong.

We hope this clears things up a bit. Much like a guy named Bob answering to “Robert”, “Bobby” or “Bob”, we answer to any of these names…each reminds us of a different facet of the company that we have built, and we are proud to be associated with all 3!
