Can You Tow in the Snow?

Towing is essential for countless drivers—from hauling work trailers for business to pulling boats, campers, or utility trailers for personal use. When the skies are clear and the roads are dry, towing can be relatively straightforward. But when winter rolls in with snow, sleet, and icy roads, things get a lot trickier. Heavy snow and sleet affect everyday driving, making it more difficult and dangerous, but what about towing? Can you tow in the snow? The short answer: yes—but it’s not as simple as hitching up and hitting the road. Here’s everything you need to know to stay safe and keep your cargo secure when the temperatures drop.

Is it safe to tow in the snow?

Yes, you can tow in snowy conditions—but it comes with added risks and responsibilities. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures reduce traction, limit visibility, and increase stopping distances. When you’re towing a heavy load, those challenges are multiplied.

To tow safely in the snow, you’ll need to adjust your driving habits, ensure your vehicle and trailer are properly equipped, and take the time to prepare for worst-case scenarios.

Essential Tips for Towing in the Snow

If you must tow in the snow or other harsh weather conditions, there are some extra precautions you should take to help keep yourself and other drivers safe on the road.

Slow Down and Drive Cautiously

While this is true at any time of year, it is especially important when there is snow or ice on the ground. If you regularly drive a pickup truck, you are used to driving a certain way. However, adding a heavy load to the back of your vehicle will affect its weight and maneuverability. By keeping your speed down, you can make it easy to control your vehicle and come to a stop without the risk of sliding. Try to keep your speed about 10-15 mph lower than you normally would.

Get Winter Tires

Good tires help you grip the road and maintain control. Ice and snow make it difficult to maintain that traction. Thankfully, there are winter tires that are made specifically for driving in slick elements. Investing in these tires will make it easier to tow safely and maintain control while behind the wheel.

Stay on Top of Routine Vehicle Maintenance

Cold weather amplifies existing vehicle issues, especially when towing. Before hitting the road, make sure your vehicle is in top shape:

  • Check tire pressure (cold temps reduce PSI)
  • Inspect brakes and brake fluid
  • Top off antifreeze and windshield washer fluid
  • Test your battery health
  • Verify trailer light connections and functionality

Getting stranded due to a mechanical failure in the snow is not just inconvenient—it can be dangerous.

Keep Your Foot on the Pedal

Longer trips that require cross-country towing, such as moving, make it easy to rely on helpful features such as cruise control. However, you should avoid these options when towing in the winter. Cruise control makes it difficult to react quickly to a loss of control or other dangerous situation. Keep your foot on the pedal to increase your reaction time should something happen on the road.

Be Prepared for the Unexpected

Even with the best planning, winter weather is unpredictable. Always carry these essentials when towing in snow:

  • Ice scraper and snow brush
  • Emergency kit (flares, jumper cables, flashlight)
  • Shovel and bag of sand or kitty litter (for traction)
  • Blankets and extra clothing
  • Food and water
  • A full tank of gas
