Can you tow in the snow?

The ability to transport large loads from one place to another is essential for many businesses around the world. Additionally, many individuals use towing capabilities for personal reasons, such as transporting a boat to the lake or camping. Towing is simple when the weather is pleasant, but what about when it turns harsh? Heavy snow and sleet affect everyday driving, making it more difficult and dangerous, but what about towing? If you’re not sure whether or now you can tow in the snow, here’s what you need to know.

Can you tow in the snow?

The short answer is yes, you can tow in the snow. However, depending on the severity of the conditions, you’ll find that towing becomes more of a challenge. Maintaining control of heavy vehicles and towing trailers in the snow is a responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly, as it is easy to cause an accident. Thankfully, there are several tips you can follow to stay safe while towing in the snow so you and your cargo can arrive at your destination safely.

Tips for Towing in the Snow

If you must tow in the snow or other harsh weather conditions, there are some extra precautions you should take to help keep yourself and other drivers safe on the road.

Keep Your Speed Down

While this is true at any time of year, it is especially important when there is snow or ice on the ground. If you regularly drive a pickup truck, you are used to driving a certain way. However, adding a heavy load to the back of your vehicle will affect its weight and maneuverability. By keeping your speed down, you can make it easy to control your vehicle and come to a stop without the risk of sliding.

Get Winter Tires

Good tires help you grip the road and maintain control. Ice and snow make it difficult to maintain that traction. Thankfully, there are winter tires that are made specifically for driving in slick elements. Investing in these tires will make it easier to tow safely and maintain control while behind the wheel.

Keep up on Routine Maintenance

The snow and ice aren’t the only things that can cause you to lose control. Breakdowns can be exacerbated by harsh elements, making it all the more important to get a routine maintenance check before towing. Pay special attention to your breaks, tires, and fluid levels before driving anywhere, as these issues can all be made worse by the cold weather.

Keep your Foot on the Pedal

Longer trips that require cross-country towing, such as moving, make it easy to rely on helpful mechanics such as cruise control. However, you should avoid these options when towing in the winter. Cruise control makes it difficult to react quickly to a loss of control or other dangerous situation. Keep your foot on the pedal to increase your reaction time should something happen on the road.

Invest in a Quality Hitch

Another way to ensure safe towing in the winter is to invest in a quality hitch like those at GEN-Y Hitch. Our innovative products are built to last and withstand the toughest conditions. Don’t settle for a cheap hitch that may fail you in transit. You should be able to rely on your towing equipment, especially in dangerous conditions like heavy snow and ice!
